Despite competition, YouTube is still the champ

Despite competition, YouTube is still the champ
Despite competition, YouTube is still the champ
This article is part of SWOT Team, a new series on Mashable that features insights from leaders in marketing, brand-building and public relations.

Over the past year, the online video playing field got a bit more crowded. Vine, still fewer than two years old, hit 40 million users and established itself as the destination for a new type of brazen creator.
A surge in traffic on Facebook video became the buzz of the advertising industry.
Vimeo started to distinguish itself in original content with a couple breakthrough series.

But in the land of “have-you-seen-it-yet” content, YouTube remains the undisputed champ.
Its 1+ billion monthly uniques dwarfs the rest of the field in video, and it has cemented its status as the entertainment destination of choice for the next generation.
In a study of 1,500 13-18-year-olds conducted earlier last year, the top five most recognizable celebrities in the U.S.
were all YouTube creators (Smosh > Jennifer Lawrence, and it’s not even that close).
The competition in online video may be gaining ground, but YouTube is still the place where more stars are born and more culture is made than any platform out there.

Recently, our company Portal A teamed up with YouTube to release Rewind 2014, a look back at the biggest moments on the platform in 2014. In addition to reveling in the glory that is Action Movie Kid and the Ice Bucket Challenge, we should take a moment to reflect on the ways in which YouTube itself changed in 2014 so we can understand where it’s headed next.

Redefining the mainstream
At this year’s Streamy Awards, the live show celebrating the YouTube community, Harley Morenstein from “Epic Meal Time” delivered an impromptu rant that immediately made waves on social media.

“Everyone who touches this microphone is worth millions of dollars,” he screamed to the delight of the audience, mostly creators themselves. Harley was not that far off — YouTube talent is making real money these days, as their compensation finally catches up to their audience.

Creators are also stepping out from behind the small screen, from Bethany Mota’s turn on Dancing With The Stars, to FreddieW’s collaboration with Key and Peele, to Zoella’s book that outsold JK Rowling in its first weeks.

The divide between mainstream and digital entertainment still exists in the eyes of the entertainment industry, but the monikers are feeling increasingly artificial.

Building for the future
When YouTube made significant investments in original programming in 2012, it did so with the explicit goal of encouraging the growth of companies that are built on top of YouTube. That ecosystem took a big step forward this year, with a series of key acquisitions and new start-ups.

In April, Disney dropped up to $1B on top multichannel network Maker Studios and then in September its competitor Fullscreen sold to AT&T for $300M-$400M.

And for those of you keeping track at home, you can add Stylehaul, Big Frame, AwesomenessTV, Rooster Teeth, and many more to the list of this year’s acquisitions. The frenzy of activity in the space is a testament to the fact that online video ecosystem is growing up and — based on rumors that the Onion and Funny or Die may be snatched up next — it won't be slowing down anytime soon.

The triumph of content
When Nike revealed its most anticipated ad of the last four years — a pre-World Cup epic entitled "Winner Stays" — it shouldn’t have come as surprise that the video debuted on YouTube or that it was four minutes and twelve seconds long, instead of a TV-friendly :30 or :60. In 2014, brands producing content over ads went from being an edgy idea to more or less the norm.

On YouTube where viewers can skip ads after less than five seconds, people are electing to watch and brands are taking notice by spending more money on the platform than ever before.

A screen for all the world
As our production team traveled the world for YouTube Rewind, we discovered thriving hubs for creators in cities like London, Tokyo, and São Paulo. As recently as three years ago, Los Angeles seemed like the undeniable center of the YouTube universe, but the creator base is spreading its roots.

The platform’s top creator (PewDiePie) this year is Swedish and its biggest video (Spider Dog) came out of Poland. YouTube recently reported that 80% of its traffic now comes from outside the U.S. With YouTube opening production hubs for creators on four continents, the company is recognizing that they are supporting a truly global entertainment network.

After another massive year for brands, creators, mainstream celebrities, and viral stars on YouTube, the platform is charging into 2015 ready to take on all comers. Apparently, watching how the space takes shape next year may turn out to be just as fun as seeing this kid for the first time. Well, maybe not quite.

Facebook has launched a new initiative to help find missing children by pushing Amber Alerts into the news feeds of its users.

The program, which Facebook has developed in partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), launches for U.S. users on Tuesday.

- Facebook is making 'Facebook at Work,' so you can Facebook at work

"When a child goes missing, the most important thing is getting out the relevant information, the correct information, to the right people at the right time," Emily Vacher, Facebook head of global safety told USA Today.

Facebook has had special pages for Amber Alerts — notifications issued when a child goes missing — since January 2011. The new system, however, will automatically target people who are near the search area, sending them a post about the missing child, photographs included. The alerts will appear both on desktop and mobile phones.

Users who have received an alert will be able to get additional information by clicking "learn more" or share the post on their timelines.

"If you see an Amber Alert delivered, it means you are actually in a position to be able to help," said Vacher.

Users will not have to sign up for the service to receive these alerts, and a Facebook spokesperson confirmed to us there won't be a way to opt out of them, either. It doesn't mean users will be swarmed with alerts, however. According to Vacher, a person will typically see one or two alerts per year.

In addition to Stickered, the updated Messenger will include holiday features like "festive frames" for New Year's Eve selfies along with holiday-themed sticker packs and snow globe chat heads. (Chat heads are the circular icons that float in the Facebook app when a conversation is active.)

Some of the features don't seem to be fully implemented yet; at the time of writing, Stickered was not available for download on Google Play, but the news post stated the app would be available later on Friday. The updates are coming to iOS soon, too.

Facebook was not immediately available to clarify the rollout of the holiday-themed updates.

Facebook Messenger has had a tumultuous year, with Facebook forcing mobile users to download the app in order to continue messaging others on the platform.

What's Changing in Social Media Marketing in 2015

What's Changing in Social Media Marketing in 2015
What's Changing in Social Media Marketing in 2015
Is your social media marketing strategy ready for 2015? While it may be difficult to believe,
the end of the year is approaching.

Now is the time to ensure that your marketing campaigns are prepared for the onslaught of changes that are likely to occur in the coming months.
Shopping Comes to Social Media

As we move into the coming year, it looks like shopping is finally going to make its appearance on the social media scene.
Facebook and Twitter have been beta-testing purchase buttons that will appear alongside tweets and posts to give users the ability to make purchases without leaving the site.
 According to Time magazine,

since Twitter and Facebook offer real-time media,
they are ideal for showcasing short-term deals associated with quickly passing trends.
When consumers are faced with time-sensitive offers streaming by on their feeds,

they may be more inclined to make impulse purchases to ensure they do not miss out on the deal.

This approach to marketing addresses one critical issue that merchants have continually faced with e-commerce, namely attracting customers to their website.

What You Can Do: Utilize a variety of useful social media. Try using content that answers consumers' questions. Make sure you are prepared when your customer is ready to buy with tailored landing pages.
Networks on the Rise

While it will still be important to ensure your marketing campaigns are focused on the big social media networks, including Facebook and Twitter, make sure that you are not ignoring newcomers.

Several social media networks have received an increase in popularity of late, including Secret, Snapchat, and Whisper. Additionally, several other new networks are emerging on the scene. Ello is among the newest additions.

This social media site has promised to never sell data.
Tsu has taken a somewhat revolutionary approach by promising to share ad revenue based on the popularity of user posts.

Yik Yak gives users the ability to exchange posts anonymously with people who are in the vicinity. Exactly how these newcomers will prove to shape up remains to be seen, but it is important to keep an eye on the social media scene as a whole.

What You Can Do: Make sure you are represented across a diverse array of social media networks, including the up and coming.
Social Media Ad-Spend Will Increase

Forbes reported that social media ad spend is set to increase significantly as more brands realize the importance of social media marketing.
During early 2014, Facebook reported a year-over-year increase in ad revenue of 10 percent.
As businesses continue to see positive results from the investments they have made in social media marketing, ad spend will likely further increase.
Twitter is already beta testing new advertising options that allow payments to be triggered based on specific actions such as app downloads,
 email opt-ins or website clicks.

What You Can Do: Review your social media advertising budget and plan accordingly for next year. Be prepared to increase your budget in order to ensure that you remain competitive.
The Humanization of Social Media

As social media continues to gain prominence, there will be an increased focus by brands on interacting with customers on a more personal level.

Forbes reported that brands which are successful in achieving the goal of connecting with their customers in a more personal manner will be better positioned to take advantage of improved brand loyalty, higher conversion rates, and faster audience growth.

What You Can Do: Look for opportunities where you can bring out the human side in your social media content.
A Boost in Image-Based Social Media

The coming year may also see an increase in image-based social media. Both Instagram and Pinterest have performed quite well.
In particular, Instagram has attracted users with the addition of a variety of features, including video editing capabilities. With the introduction of in-feed video advertising,
Instagram is set to attract even more marketers going into next year.
This feature gives marketers the option to pay the social media site for 15-second videos based on the gender, age, and demographics of users.

What You Can Do: If you do not already have a presence of image-based social media, including Pinterest and Instagram, make this a priority for the coming year.
A Marriage between Social Media Marketing and Content Marketing

In the past, social media marketing and content marketing have been viewed as somewhat disparate entities.
That is all set to change in 2015, as more marketers will begin to recognize the importance of integrating content marketing with social media marketing.
Social media actually provides the ideal platform for content marketing, especially when content is developed specifically for social media. This approach makes sense,
given that interesting content is one of the leading reasons that consumers follow brands on social media.

What You Can Do: Begin planning your content marketing strategy for next year and look for opportunities where you can integrate your content marketing with your social media marketing campaign for more impactful results.
Social Media Marketing Becomes Even More Data Driven

Data driven marketing efforts are certainly not new to social media marketing, but going into the coming year, more marketers will begin to make data a priority. According to Ragan, ad spend on marketing analytics will increase by as much as 60 percent.

Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) now report putting 8 percent of their marketing budgets toward analytics. Such investments are set to increase over the next few years. Marketing automation technology is anticipated to increase by as much as 50 percent by next year.

What You Can Do: Make plans now to incorporate data even more in your marketing efforts next year. Review your budget to determine potential for ad spend increases based on data driven marketing.

As social media marketing continues to evolve, staying on top of trends will become even more important to remaining relevant and competitive.

How to Optimize Your Twitter Profile for Mobile Users

How to Optimize Your Twitter Profile for Mobile Users

Are the majority of your Twitter followers using a mobile device?

Do you want to optimize your Twitter profile for mobile views?

Understanding how to design your Twitter profile for mobile views helps you put your best foot forward.

In this article you’ll find four ways to make sure your Twitter profile makes a great first impression with mobile users.
Why Optimize Twitter for Mobile Views?

Current Twitter data confirms that 80% of Twitter users are on mobile devices. They use Twitter during their commute to work, while they’re shopping and while they watch television.
Additionally, past data from Twitter shows that users who primarily access Twitter from a mobile device are 79% more likely to be on Twitter multiple times a day and are 44% more likely to click on links. This gives you more than enough reasons to make sure your Twitter presence is ready for mobile viewers.
#1: Extend Your Branding to Twitter

Use the same color scheme and logo design from your website on your Twitter profile.

When you do, you make it easier for your followers, prospects and customers to find and recognize you. Plus, they instantly know what content to expect from your profile
#2: Design Images Carefully

Both your header image and profile picture need to stand out on Twitter, so they’re recognizable on mobile.

You upload your header image at 1500 x 1500 pixels and your profile image at 400 x 400 pixels, but they’re automatically resized when Twitter is viewed on a mobile device. Be creative in those spaces, and focus on presenting your company brand as a whole, instead of just as a logo.
It’s also good to remember that many mobile Twitter apps let users hide user names in their news feed, so your profile image may be the ONLY thing your followers see next to your message. Use one that’s easily identifiable.

For many brands on Twitter, this means using the company logo as the profile picture, but if you’re an individual it’s best to use your picture. For best results, use a GIF or PNG when you upload a vector-based profile image and a JPG or PNG when you upload a photo-based profile image.

Whichever you choose, make sure people can immediately recognize and associate the messages you’re sending out with your brand or identity
#3: Tell a Story With Your Bio

After the header image and bio picture, your bio is the next thing users see on your mobile Twitter profile. Twitter gives you 160 characters to describe your business. Use them all to tell your story to clearly and concisely highlight your uniqueness and encourage people to follow you.

Jay Baer suggests you should “treat your bio like SEO copy,” and he’s right. Include hashtags and keywords in your bio to increase the chances of your profile showing up in front of new audience members searching Twitter for those same hashtags or keywords.
#4: Test Profiles on Different Devices and Apps

It’s difficult to anticipate every kind of mobile device people will use to view your profile on Twitter. That’s why it’s important to test out your Twitter profile on various devices.

Though we don’t all have the money to buy multiple devices, there are many online tools, like Responsive Test and Responsive Design Checker, to test how your Twitter profile displays on various mobile devices. These tools often let you choose the screen resolution and/or the device being used. Simply type in your Twitter profile URL and you’re all set.

It’s also important to test out how your Twitter profile displays in various third-party Twitter apps. For example, in both TweetBot and Echofon for iOS, profile header images are blurred when users first view the profile
Here you see why you want to make sure the color of your header doesn’t make your account details unreadable when your profile is viewed in a Twitter app.

Your Turn

Given the increasing number of people using Twitter on mobile, it makes good sense to review and adapt your Twitter profile for mobile views, so it stands out in the feed.

Today, you need to constantly grow your network, no matter how small or large your business. A unique Twitter profile that’s optimized for mobile can help you develop relationships with new and potential clients who live their lives on the go.

Google Doodle Celebrates Physicist Niels Bohr's 127th Birthday
Sunday's Google Doodle celebrates the 127th birthday of Niels Bohr, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist who revolutionized our understanding of the structure of atoms.

The Google Doodle shows off the atomic model that Bohr came up with in 1913. Bohr was the first to incorporate quantum physics into our understanding of atoms by putting forth the notion that electrons orbit around the nucleus of an atom.

Bohr was born in Copenhagen in 1885 and went on to win the Nobel Prize for his work in 1922. After World War II broke out, Bohr fled Denmark and eventually ended up in the United States where he and his son worked on the Manhattan Project, which led to the development of the atomic bomb.
While he may be associated with the bomb, the Nobel Prize committee points out in their biography of him online that Bohr devoted much of his later years to the "peaceful application of atomic physics and to political problems arising from the development of atomic weapons."

Bohr is now widely viewed as one of the leading physicists of the 20th century.
